I had never Identified the term redlining but it was a subtle bias in my community. I teach first and second grade in a community where poverty is prevalent. Either you are under the poverty line or you aren't. It's about 50/50. However, affordable housing is an issue. Homelessness is a problem and I can see racial disparities with the residents of a shelter that I visited. I understand that this is a problem and it is not completely new to me however it's severity is. How can we change a system so set in its nonhumanistic ways? I know it starts with me. I just feel so small in this fight. As I ponder the education system, questions surround me. What needs to change at least in early childhood? What can I do? These are questions that are now haunting me.
