As I'm sure is true for many Americans, the story I was told about American history and the videos in this module differ greatly. I grew up in the Midwest, where national pride is an integral part of many peoples' identity. Even though I've never considered myself to be someone with much national pride, I still was fed a lot of information and messages that painted a very white-washed picture of our history. Statements like, "America is the great melting pot," or, "in America, anyone can be whatever they want to be," made me feel like any contradictory messages were created by people who weren't working hard enough or who harbored resentment towards our country.
Although I have done much to re-think American history already, I still found myself to be somewhat uncomfortable with some of the information presented in these videos. I think that this discomfort comes directly from messages about American history that I was taught in school and by people that surrounded me. I am both excited and nervous to dive into this discomfort more in the upcoming modules.
