The most shocking aspect of this module for me was the section of the Jim Crow Museum video dedicated to racist portrayals of President Barack Obama. I was appalled at the similarities between the antiquated depictions of black people and the representations of our former president as a monkey. Some may argue that caricatures exist of all of our presidents, both past and present. However, it is exceptionally tone-deaf to fall back on historically racist depictions of black people as "ammunition" against a president you dislike. It would be entirely unacceptable for a newspaper to run a racist caricature of a president if he or she were Chinese American for example, so why is it more acceptable to utilize these caricatures and stereotypes for our one black president?
