I've been living in Oregon now for almost 3 years. My husband and I bought a house in Dallas, Oregon and this town has a history of racism and was a base for the KKK. A friend of mine tells me that the KKK is still active here.
One of the videos we watched was about native american boarding schools. Turns out that the 2nd one built is 20 minutes from me and still running. When I first moved here I though, oh, cool! A school for the native americans, thinking that they are trying to preserve their culture. Now I know that it's original purpose was evil. Upon further research, there are some 200 unmarked graves here. I feel so sick about it.
I'm trying to figure out how to navigate living in an area with such a terrible history of racism. I encounter people here all the time that make racist comments. I'm going through this training to get the confidence I need to be a true anti-racist and speak up!
