In previous years, I have taken my students to the Shawnee Indian Mission in Fairway, Kansas. Shawnee Mission, like many other missions, was established as a manual training school attended by boys and girls from Shawnee, Delaware, and other Indian nations from 1839 to 1862. I did not realize that this establishment was used to institutionalize Native Americans against their own free will. I will continue to visit but, the focus of lesson will to embrace the true history behind the school.
This was unknown to me prior to today as well. It's prompting me to look into the "true" histories of the three missions around my hometown. I think a refocusing on the lesson will be important for your students. Thanks for your work.
