The video of the Native American children being taken from their families is completely heartbreaking. Listening to the stories about how so many kids were ripped away from their families and cultures for no other reason besides them being nonwhite was devastating. It makes me think a lot about how this issue is still prevalent today.
We have so much bias and sometimes that can cloud our judgment about others, particularly people of colour, and leads to the situations that have been going on for years. We need to stop these automatic jumps to conclusions about others if we want to see change.
I keep thinking about the generational trauma that began so long ago, which continues today due to racist policies and practices. Being a history major, I have to remind myself that these videos are just a small snapshot of our racist history which continues today and a lot of us don't learn about a lot of this history in schools and it tends to be hidden in media as well.
