The evidence of racism is overwhelming. The material presented in Module 1 shows how racism and the supremacy of whites was envisioned, constructed, and enacted throughout history since the first Europeans invaded the U.S. Racism infects every aspect of our lives: housing, family composition, health, employment, education, transportation, policing/legal system, government, and on and on. It is hard to know what to do. But I try to remind myself that I need to plug into making change SOMEWHERE. I have to fight against feeling paralyzed against the enormity of it all and find a way to act.
The more I learn, the more it seems to me that the lives of people of color involve daily confrontations with deprivation (of access to basic needs, quality education/employment & more), 'otherness", proving oneself, and so much more. I know that sexism does not have the same impact on me that racism has on people of color. However, it continues to strike me that dismantling white patriarchy needs to happen in order to empower all people of color.
