I was struck by how much racist propaganda/branding that I was actually exposed to as a child, but had no idea many were considered racist symbols (and ashamedly admit-still didn't up until watching the Jim Crow museum video :( ) - especially - the Aunt Jamima and Cream of Wheat brands - as well as the cartoons, movies, toys. and other entertainment. I am flabbergasted...I can see now how this type of branding and entertainment have "normalized" racism in children without their full realization. As a kid, I just thought he was a nice looking black chef that made cool breakfast cereal for cold winter mornings...I never drew the connections. Mind blown.
So much illumination in this first module alone... I'm blown away, a bit overwhelmed, a bit ashamed, a bit angry - but even more determined to keep digging, questioning, and uncover as many blind spots as I can.
