I thought that this first module laid a great foundation for being an anti-racist. I feel like I'm a pretty educated person and I knew that all the systems that we have in place in American had racists roots, but I did not know all of the specific details. As a social worker, it was difficult to comprehend how social workers played such a large role in stealing Native American children. Even though that was awhile back, it makes total sense as to why today, people of color are so hesitant to trust social workers. Of course they don't trust us immediately! Communities of color have had social workers involved in their lives in negative ways for years. As a white social worker, that's something that I have to be aware of and respect anytime I'm working with families of color.
