How much do you believe our history informs people's beliefs and behavior today? What information in this module stood out to you or impacted you the most?
I think the history we are taught completely impacts our beliefs and behaviors. For example in school we were taught about the civil rights movement and made to believe that racism is a thing of the past. And that the only racism left that exists are those belonging to white supremacy groups.
Ignorances is bliss.
To be completely honest, prior to watching these videos I only knew a fraction of what I learned. I had been blissfully unaware that much of what I have learned in school had been taught in a way that keeps majority of white men and woman ignorant to how our country was built.
I always had this idea that our Country was this great place that accepts all races and we are all living peacefully and equally. I can tell you now that idea has been completely shattered and I am deeply saddened that I was blinding walking through life thus far thinking we are all equal when in reality we are not.
Nina, I agree. I also had some knowledge of most of what was shared in Module 1, but now I see it was purely superficial. Sadly in 2020, the history we were taught--the white agenda history--continues to inform people's beliefs and behaviors.
I hope that the information we learned in Module 1 will become standard curriculum in the civics, history, and cultural studies classroom across our nation. But this won't happen until enough of us speak up and insist on the change. As an educator at a small college, I see how the redlining and property tax funding of public schools has places so many of our students at a disadvantage. Just last week, a freshman told me how she was "slapped across the face" with the knowledge that an "A" at her school is a "C" at a predominately white school. She felt cheated by her school. She felt uneducated. She felt like a fraud. She began to question her worth. She now struggles to stay motivated with her classwork.
So much as informed me from module 1, but I want to take action on a local and state level to defund the public schools [from property taxes]. I want to work to end cash bails and the school to prison pipeline for so many African American children.
