In learning from our history, we must actively seek to improve and change our present. While the facts that I learned were not altogether new, the emotions elicited from them should be. Equity for all means changing the system and recognizing the current inequities and biases with the intent and motivation for action. Awareness needs to be a spark that lights a fire for change.
Awareness needs to be a spark, I agree. But also, the fire for change needs more than just a spark. It needs people to tend the fire, help it spread and burn the parts of the system that need to be totally reworked while containing it from burning down what good has already been built.
We need voters and we need politicians willing to step up and do the work. And often the politicians come from places of privilege and therefore maintain the status quo. We need to address systemic racism not only in the law enforcement field, but in the medical field and the service field as well. And that starts in the education field, as noted by the video on redlining and the funding of education.
