I had never heard of the origins of policing being to keep the slaves in control and to keep them from escaping. That is fascinating, and so powerfully sad to me. It somehow makes everything happening now make a lot more sense. I know that not all police are bad, I have friends who are in law enforcement and I wouldn't say bad things on them at all; but there is an underlying issue there for sure - the "law and order" principle that was discussed, that is so prevalent in society. I have worked with kids in the system for 11 years and have seen first hand the effects of red lining, the foundational structures, poverty, and incarceration have had on them. It's horrific, really.
