I think there is a clear connection regarding poverty, educational opportunity, and incarceration. Our society has been set up to deliberately limit success of POC. These communities are not offered equal education opportunities, as evidenced by poor funding compared to schools in whiter, more affluent neighborhoods. I believe that children are raised in these communities believing they will fail because of what society is telling them. Without the same educational and monetary opportunities, as well as without the same access to past wealth handed down to them, the cycle of poverty continues. This is not due to character flaws or not trying hard enough: our society is inherently built this way. Additionally, POC are at an exponentially higher chance of incarceration; many adults are never even given the chance to succeed because they are imprisoned for minor offenses.
