Due to some friends and acquaintances I know that work in social justice fields, I knew a good amount about the injustices and broken system of incarceration. One point that really stood out to me during that video was the idea that we are not incarcerating people, but rather, entire groups of people. I also think it is vital to understand that the United States has one of the highest rates of incarceration. This means that other countries have found other ways to help people and to prevent crime other than incarceration. It is important that this system be reformed and funds are reallocated so that people have better access to health care, mental health care, housing, et cetera. This will prevent the need of large prison systems to fit hundreds upon hundreds of prisoners that really just need another sort of intervention.
The way that this relates to red lining is in the point that we are mass incarcerating whole groups of people. These people are often from minority ethnic and racial backgrounds with lower income, lower SES, and less education. This grooms them, in a way, to mess up and "need" to be sentenced time.
