As someone who studied U.S. History and is currently teaching U.S. History, I find it unacceptable to exclude these events and history in the curriculum. We hit the Holocaust extremely hard. I'm not trying to downplay what happened in the Holocaust. I still feel that needs to be taught. I feel that light needs to be brought to the internment camps and how immigrants were/are treated. It is important to get a well rounded picture of U.S. History in order to be more empathetic towards others who may be different.
Reflection 2:
These past videos really brought up the problems that we have in America involving systematic racism. It seems to be this vicious cycle we are in. Having strong schools that accept everyone for their background and try and find strengths in all students and not try to get them to live up to the "white standard" is important for all Americans. I think the media has been a detriment to American views on people of other races as well. It seems that they play into this stereotype to allow others to what? Feel better about their feelings or validate them??
Reflection 3:
I think our history very much impacts where we are today as a society. I think the government holds a lot of power to make laws that restrict those who are not heterosexual white Americans. There were some things in the module that were eye opening that I didn't know prior to watching the videos. The Jim Crow video was eye opening in the portrayal of African Americans. It's sad to think of the violence towards African Americans, and after looking at the Obama materials, it is sad that people still have those beliefs still.
