I learned a lot in watching this cluster of videos regarding the history of racism. It was shocking and disappointing and infuriating to learn more about these things in an hour of YouTube videos than what I was taught in school. The suppression of accurate and holistic educational information is a pillar of institutional racism.
I absolutely believe that the various forms of racism and discrimination are still present today. The first two examples that come to mind are the issues at the border between the US and Mexico. ICE is an institution designed to target and harass Latinx peoples in the name of "protecting" the US both economically and medically. Another example is the modern day lynchings occurring in the name of white supremacy.
I am angered that I have not taken it upon myself to learn these things earlier but extremely grateful for this resource to help me continue my education.
I am disappointed with myself too about not getting educated sooner on this most critical topic.
I am seeing that my being white has afforded me many privileges that I did not even know I have. I have known about the Japanese encampments, the Native Americans being "assimilated", but I am learning now about the law and order that has oppressed People of Color. I am a teacher and I am concerned about the high incarceration rate of men of color. I am wondering how do I help to change this...what can I do personally to change this?
I’m with you! Next step is taking action. I have my own path to find, as well.
