I would like to think with all the history and education available to our citizens that racism would have ceased but it appears that the racism never stopped or declined. Society has adapted their ways of oppressing people of different colors. Beliefs and values are taught and this starts in the home. Education and policy changes are needed to see the necessary and desired outcomes for everyone to have the same opportunities. The portions in the module pertaining to assimilation was most interesting to me. I work in foster care and adoptions and it was astounding to me that society approved of erasing a child's birth connection. Their birth connection is a part of their identity which if they were removed from that, they will seek it later to have closure. The generational trauma made since to me too because parents pass on to their children family history and the hardships they have overcome. Many families still have to overcome challenges that should not be happening. Violence should not be used as a method to control a group of people to maintain the status quo. America's history is dark and I hope to be a part of a future society that brightens the path for ALL Americans.
Samantha, I cannot tell you how very much my daughter would agree with your observations about adoption. Although she has and does love her adopted family, she felt so much better about herself and the world after getting to know her biologicals. And when we all met she was almost 40 years old in an all white adoption on both sides. Can't forget that a place in the Universe matters.
Megan, I'm so happy to hear that she was able to meet everyone in her family. Adoption is a beautiful thing and I hope more families continue to be open minded about expanding their family through adoption. Through adoption, you not gain just a child but their birth family too! Thank you for sharing!
As you say, I am sometimes refered to ad "the sister from another mother.". A word of caution, not all reunification stories play out this way. We have heard some heart- breaking, hurtful, cruel stories.
