Do you think these historical events, rules, and laws still impact our society today?
All of the historical events, rules, and laws are still being felt today. You can see that indigenous people are still being targeted to be completely removed from this country. You can see how government is still trying to rid POC through environmental racism, gerrymandering and through the financial markets.
I am an immigrant of this country and can see how things have translated into different context, but the same issues are happening just in different forms and it needs to change.
Absolutely right. Still happening every day.
Of course racism runs deep. Through this curriculum we are being exposed to important historic and ongoing examples of racism, but why is this not madatory as part of our education system, as part of training of police, politicians and all public servants? Without this kind intervention racism will continue forward.
My niece, junior in a Seattle high school, has had some good education on systemic racism in this country, and that gives me hope. You are right, it needs to be mandatory for everyone. (The Boy Scouts just announced they are adding a badge for diversity and inclusion.)
Glad to hear there's some progress, I guess we have to wait until 2021 to hope for more
I was unaware of some of these laws and rules before seeing the videos. I think the impact is ongoing today in a variety of ways - food deserts and pollution causing health concerns, difficulties in getting approved for loans or acquiring particular jobs, and other discrimination practices that make life more difficult.
Yes, everything still impacts the current moment and even as laws may change, the underlying systemic racism and discrimination does not change, only takes a new form.
