Do you think these historical events, rules, and laws still impact our society today? What are your thoughts after viewing these videos?
Yes, I do believe that the specific events, rules, and laws that we viewed in the videos still heavily impact our society today. The past has heavily shaped the way we have come to treat others in our society and has established norms in a way that gives White people power and privilege. Although there may be some individuals who do not understand how the past relates to our current day situations, it is still visibly clear to minorities that people of color in the United States are not being given equal treatment and the same opportunities as White people. Black people are viewed as criminals and are subject to police brutality, Latinos are viewed as thugs, lazy and as illegal aliens, and Asians have been currently blamed for the pandemic and labeled as the group of people to be angry at. People of color have been seen as a threat to this country for decades and a lot of us know that what is not understood or unknown often only causes fear which is why others want to ignore the fact the we have to look in the face of injustice every day. Our needs are often ignored or not taken seriously. It is because of White privilege that minorities stay stuck in a state in which they cannot move forward. It is simply because of the color of our skin and our cultures that we are mistreated and suffocating from this harmful and toxic environment in which we currently live in, and that is something I find extremely disappointing. Therefore, if we seem angry, hurt, sad, and fed up with the system, policies, and the government, it is because we are. We have had enough and are finally ready to use our voices to fight back.
