When I moved as a child and switched schools from the Northern US to a southern confederate state I noticed how much history being taught was focused on the Civil War (part of 4th and 5th grade), though not focused on the injustices of POC, I thought it was really weird. I vaguely remember learning about other cultures again without the injustices and the role white America played. We aren't taught History just the positive outcomes for white American history. As an adult I've read articles, watched movies, and listened to podcasts to help me become more aware; however, seeing the grouping of resources together really struck me and brought it home that we are not learning (or provide the opportunity to learn) from our history, we are still doing the same things and in many of the same ways. It has also brought to light how insensitive I have been without intention in different times in my life--which just fuels the injustices. I feel sickened and saddened and I have the desire do better by being purposeful and intentional.
I would like to incorporate the section on various Biases into one of the courses I teach at an Alabama Community College. Would I have your permission to use some of that information?
