In watching the videos, I was reminded of some historical events and practices that I already knew about. However, I often did not know the larger context for or the extent of these events and practices. For example, I had learned a little bit about Indian Boarding Schools, but I had no clue about the forced Indian adoption program. I had known about de-lousing and humiliating "health" inspections on the Southern border, but I did not know many Mexican immigrants had died in a fire in connection to them being "cleansed" in kerosene. I also certainly did not know that these chemical cleaning processes helped influence the gas chambers in Nazi Germany. I was also struck by how recent some of these events were. I had heard about the Tuskegee experiments, but for some reason, I had thought (or assumed) such cruel and inhumane experiments took place in the 19th century, not well into the 70s! Even more alarming were the experiments conducted on low-income black boys in the early 90s, a time when I was child.
