I understood the catalyst for rioting and protests after George Floyd's death, but struggled with disappointment regarding the looting that happened. I felt poorly for store owners and thought about how some people were just taking advantage of the situation. A friend told me about Trevor Noah's video on the topic, and his statement about thinking why is it not a problem if people loot Target and other stores, as the social contract has been repeatedly broken really shifted my view. That concept is highlighted in all of these videos, and reflecting in a more intentional and deeper way on institutional racism and the blindness and judgments I have around it as a White woman is challenging and important. Saying that feels so insufficient, and yet I do not know another way to communicate it right now.
