I grew up outside Chicago in an affluent suburb. My own children grew up in West Tennessee in a poor rural area. The history I learned and the history they learned in school were similar. I have to thank all of the more enlightened presentations I watched on PBS and elsewhere for the broader picture I have. STILL my daughter was unaware of some of the past acts our government has taken against groups. It's hard to keep up. It's hard to keep track. We continue to make the same mistakes. I can't help but wonder if our legislators, local and national don't need to be reminded of these travesties at the opening of every legislative session just as I, as a school teacher, have to watch hazardous material, suicide prevention, and various other safety videos every school year.
