I vote, I speak out when my father uses racist remarks, I am way too aware of the struggles our students of color face on our white rural campus. I hope I am considered a safe person, an advocate, and a caring person. I see race, I see sexuality, I see all the things that make us different, but I see that as a non-issue to my perception of the person. We're all people.
But that doesn't change the fact that I feel powerless against those in power, and knowing that there are those in power that don't want to lose it, and have the tools to get their way makes me feel impotent. We have to get a more diverse body at the table of leadership and legislation, and we have to hold people accountable. Where does it start? It starts with awareness, but is that enough? I don't think so. There are plenty of people that know all too well exactly what they are doing.
