I definitely think these historical events, rules and laws still impact society today.
The videos were jam packed with information! I took lots of notes and had to pause many times to stay on track. Some of the history I was somewhat familiar with, like environmental racism and the influence Eugenics had on Hitler and Nazi Germany. I had no idea however, of the extent of some of these things. The history of the "gas baths" at the border for example were extremely eye-opening. The bravery demonstrated by Carmelita Torres is incredible, and how tragic that her influence has been practically erased. In a similar way, I knew nothing about Aki Kurose and the positive impact she had in education and human rights. I had some understanding of racism towards Japanese people after Pearl Harbor and WWII, but no idea of the internment camps and extent of the inhumane treatment of Japanese-American citizens. The medical history video was also very disturbing and enlightening. I had heard of the Tuskegee experiments but not about much else on that topic. Forces me to wonder what other racist practices are still happening in doctors' offices today.
I've learned so much in just a short amount of time. I am so grateful for the opportunity to take this course and to share my thoughts here. Thank you.
