The more educated I become about the reach of systemic racism in American and the influence this has played in every aspect of our community, the more outrage I feel. I feel like all of the politics of our country have been based on oppression, it's very disheartening to feel like there have been no white political figures who were willing to risk and change the course. Everything we are taught in school has carried the same brainwashing.
I struggle with how to ensure this brainwashing doesn't continue for future generations and am eternally grateful for this training that has compiled so many great resources in one place. I have a four year old and am already trying to figure out how to weave information about marginalized groups in our country into her life, mostly through books. Since she was little I have wondered what I will do when she starts to learn history in school because I want to supplement what she's learning, but I'm not a historian. Maybe someone knows of a textbook of "forgotten history" (as in not taught in most schools because the majority wants to forget it) that I could use! I could just turn to the appropriate chapter when it's what her class is studying and do a little at home! Ah, but I suppose I'll likely just have to continue to try to make a concentrated effort to find resources to supplement what she's learning!
