All of these historical events continue to impact our society. People like to think that we have grown and moved past a need to have a focus on civil rights and I will admit that I gave our country a lot of grace because I was ignorant of the real history and experiences of black and brown people. After viewing these videos, I feel sad, but it is important to expose ourselves to this history so we can better understand why racism continues.
Of course. Japanese Internment camps have simply changed the identity and location of those being interned. Now our country's internment camps contain Mexican citizens at our southern borders. Fear, hysteria, and racism are still the motivating factors. Flint still has toxic water, and even though the entire country is aware, the leaders are not moved to fix the water. If these were white people being exposed to this much lead, the situation would have been fixed immediately. We are still whitewashing our history so that these horrific stories of immoral, inhumane, and deplorable abuse is either omitted or cleaned up so that the acts are more palatable.
