As a social worker I was already aware of many of these instances of institutional racism as this was a part of our study and combating it is a part of our ethical obligation, but I can't help but see all the parallels that continue in our society today. It seems that even thought these events occurred and we could have learned from them we continue to perpetuate the same mentality in the name of greed, and capitalism. We have so many tools at our disposal and we are not utilizing them to the best of our abilities. How do we move from knowledge to change, large sweeping systemic overhaul? This is the question I am on now for myself and my family and the institutions I interact with.
This section was overwhelming. How do we go about dismantling a system designed for the oppression of blacks? Where do we begin? So many black men in jail, due to a system stacked against them. When one black man goes to jail, so many others are effected. I have had students will a parent in jail and they have such a tough time bonding with others, concentrating, etc.
