The connections are very clear and lend themselves to our understanding of this vicious cycle. I struggle with how to educate others on these topics. I see it clearly in my head but cannot seem to articulate it in a way that others in my community can. I grew up in a very rural, white area in Northern, New York. The “stories” and “jokes” about people of color are rampant and many of my family members do not understand how continuing to pass down these “stories” and “jokes” are also passing down subconscious racism. I feel bad but I am so tired of discussing this with them and therefore have distanced myself. How can you perform anti-racist acts in a family full of people who are subconsciously racist so that they can become more aware of how their actions and words are hurtful to the very few numbers of people of color who live in that area?
I come from a very rural white community in southern Indiana. My response is to usually look at them and simply ask, "Why is that funny?" Usually, as they explain it to me they don't even realize how ridiculous they sound, but sometimes others who are listening do. Keep in mind as you debate with people, the chances are good that you will never change their minds. Also keep in mind that there are likely people who are listening (or reading on social media) who may be influenced by conversations. ...who are looking for a reason for their minds to change. Debate keeping those folks in mind. I beleive that is a one big way to we create more allys.
