There are clear connections with the foundational laws of this country and our current situation. Working in an urban elementary school, I see the disparities daily. My students do not have the same opportunities as those a few miles down the street. My guess is there was red lining at some point in the past. Property values are low, and thus resources are low. There are a high number of students with a parent in prison or being raised by grandparents. Of all of the information presented, the incarceration rates was the most disturbing. How can anyone look at those numbers and not believe there is a systematic problem in our country? I think about all of the sweet faces that walk through my school daily and can't believe that 1 in 7 of them will end of up prison. We have to do better!
