In response to: Reflect on the discussion about history, our foundational structures, the "red lining" of families of color out of opportunity for economic advancement, the connection between poverty, educational opportunity, and incarceration. Are you able to see those connections?
I'm starting to see how all of these things add up to such a heavy weight that it's impossible to get out from under it. With parental incarceration, disparate school funding, implicit biases affecting employment, policing designed to protect white supremacy, red lining impacting home ownership and ability to gain assets and wealth and so on...It becomes impossible to overcome this multitude of oppressive systems and lead a "successful" life - get an education, get a good job, own a home, build wealth, have a family, etc. In the past when I've been taught about racism it's been more focused on just one aspect, without this broader consideration of how all of these aspects connect and interact with one another. Looking at it this way is uncomfortable, saddening and overwhelming.
