I am currently a graduate student working on a masters in Higher Education Administration. This most recent semester we talked about the danger of a single story (great tedtalk, highly recommend). These videos reinforced this notions. This videos defy the white history I have been taught and have even reached. I student taught 8th American History. I taught the Bracero Program. I did not know, mention, or teach anything concerning the gasoline baths or the events occurring at the border. This absolutely impacts our society. The events mentioned in this series have a direct impact on today. We see it in the dialogue around immigrants, housing issues, education, the disolvement of native territory and more. This reaffirms and amplify systemic racism and highlights the harsh realities of our history. It seems profound and at times even impossible but in all actuality none of the issues mentioned where that long ago and the affects are felt today on an overwhelming level.
