Yes, of course, every exclusionary, abusive, and genocidal policy and practice up to this day still has grave consequences for our society, and in particular the people of color and immigrants who we have sought to deem less-than, and therefore not deserving of full equality. Once a system has been in place long enough for no one living to have experienced anything different, then people begin to believe the current state of things are the natural order and meant to be. I felt anxiety and dread watching these videos, that we may be forever trapped in a cycle of abuse that is simply too large, and too insidious to break. Add that all of this was set in motion because a handful of white men wanted to codify their advantage to maintain power and control, and I feel physically ill and even more powerless to effect change. I am a white woman who like it or not, benefits from the racist structure of our systems and yet I do not believe that we are in a zero sum societal game where justice and equality for people of color would mean less of the same for me or any other white person. Despite often feeling hopeless I need to work in any way I can to stop this ugly legacy from continuing.
