Between this class & some books I've been reading, I feel like I'm finally able to articulate clearly a response to people who say things like, "Slavery was a long time ago. Why don't they just get over it?" (ugh)
I've understood that we have disenfranchised the Black population for centuries and continued to, but now I understand how redlining, lack of access to better education or opportunities, implicit bias & blatant discrimination, the school to prison pipeline, police systems set up with racist intentions, and more come together to continue to oppress and separate the Black population from the Whites.
We need to understand that Black people aren't "bringing this on themselves" or that they just need to "work hard like we did" or whatever else. They have very real obstacles both in front of them currently and littering the paths of their parents, grandparents, etc to be SURE they can never get too far ahead. This is frustrating to learn about but also inspires me to keep WORKING until things change! I'm grateful to have better terms and discussion points going forward when I encounter these types of ignorant statements.
